Computers Can Help Dyslexia Children (in India)

NEW DELHI: Children who suffer from dyslexia, a learning disability, but are otherwise normal and intelligent students can over come the problem if they are encouraged by parents and teachers.
Experts made this observation at a workshop, “Growing up and Living With a Learning Disability”, organised on Wednesday by Educare, a non-government organisation engaged in providing quality education and clinical diagnosis and creating general awareness about learning disabilities.
Educare director Sunita Sondhi said the purpose of the workshop was to share knowledge with parents of children with learning disabilities as well as professionals.
Dyslexia symptoms may be categorised as learning symptoms, behavioural symptoms and general signs.
During learning a child with this affliction shows difficulty in reading, writing, spelling, comprehension and mathematical calculations.
Dyslexia is recognised by the World Federation of Neurology as “a disorder manifested by difficulty in learning to read, despite conventional instruction, adequate intelligence and socio-cultural opportunity.
It is dependent upon fundamental cognitive disabilities which are frequently constitutional in origin”.
The workshop was conducted by Bart Pisha, director of research at the Centre for Applied Special Technology (CAST) and Richard Wanderman, an educational technology consultant from New Preston, USA.
Both Mr Pisha and Mr Wanderman, who suffered from a similar learning disability in their childhood, were in the Capital to share their expertise of dyslexia management with professionals in the field here.
Mr Wanderman, who also maintains a site(www.ldresources.com) on the worldwide web devoted to learning disabilities advocated the application of computers in a variety of capacities in helping children overcome dyslexia.
He spoke on the uses of a computer, AlphaSmart, as a writing tool of special help for dyslexic children. It is used in classrooms in the USA. According to Mr Wanderman, while a child must be told of his or her learning disabilities, the child should also be told of abilities in other areas, where he or she can do better than anyone else.
Self-confidence is the key. It’s the parent’s and teachers’s responsibility to develop self-confidence in a child,” Mr Wanderman said.
So, while the child must be made aware of certain disabilities in his learning system, he should also be told that he is capable of doing many other things in a way just like anyone else, or even better,” he said.
Note: Bart Pisha and Richard Wanderman were sent to India by Ketan and Manish Kothari (two of the founders of AlphaSmart, Inc.) to speak to a variety of groups about growing up with learning problems and ways to deal with learning problems in school. Only cities like Delhi,Mumbai and Chennai have answer to your problem.
You will have to put your child in one of the good schools in these cities.
If your wife can study further than make her do BEd in Special Education from S.N.D.T University in Mumbai.If not than take help from an organisation called alpha to omega,Chennai.They do have short term courses which you can join.They can even train your child.

My younger son Durgesh studing in 6th Std. is facing lots of problem because of his dislexi, discalculia, disgraphia as I could not get any proper remedial education tutor in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. We came to know his problem when he was in 2nd std. except maths he was not doing any subjects. Then teacher told us to take him to the conuncilor and all examination are done and then we came to know that he is having this problem. machanically he is very intellegent but in reading and writing he is zero. I am so much worried about his future. Please suggest any remedial schools in Mumbai. We are not rich people that we can send him to New Delhi or US, but in and around Mumbai city is it well and good, and we can afford.

It has been mentioned that help is available, but only in Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai. Are there no such resources in Bangalore that anyone knows of? I have a younger brother, who is now 18, who has LD. Since we earlier lived in a place with absolutely no resources, he has given up his studies…and remains depressed and alone most of the time. We are getting him homoeo medicines, but a support group is essential, as all here know. Is there none in Bangalore? Please help!

Dyslexics may have tremendous talent and can be successful people: scientists Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison and humorist Erma Bombeck had dyslexia; athletes Greg Louganis and Bruce Jenner, entertainers Tom Cruise and Cher have dyslexia.
In the past, I have worked as Computer Instructor in special school in Delhi on part time basis and one of my student requiring special education achieved first division (64% marks) in Open School Computer examination. So do not loose heart.
In India many administrative people including judiciary in government suffer from Dyslexia in performing their duties. Why blame children alone ?

i have a younger sister who is now 20 yrs old. she was diagnosed with specific learning disability around 1999. since both my parents had passed away, our local guardians, after my mothers death in 1998, kept her in a special school for mentally handicapped children in bangalore.In May 2005 she was diagnosed with a brain tumour and the doctor at Manipal(b’lore) said that the tumor had been growing for a very long time and its location was the region that is responsible for ones learning. She underwent a successful neuro-surgery the same month and has recovered, though is still on medication to prevent any seizures. Curently she is staying with my younger brother and his wife in Kolkatta and i am at Pune.she still cannot read, write or do any maths. Can you please tell me if there are any schools or institutes in India that can help. what can we do to make her independent to a certain extent atleast? Are there courses available that she can do? Ranen: One of the tools used in some classrooms for students who are either deaf or partially hard of hearing is an FM system. This is a system where the student where’s headphones (or earbuds) connected to a small receiver they can wear around their neck and the teacher wears a wireless microphone that captures his/her voice. The FM system greatly amplifies the teacher’s voice but just for that student, not for all students.

My son is in Class 7. He has been diagnosed as having LD. He also has severe hearing loss in his right ear. Since my husband is with the Air Force we are on the move and at times posted to places where help is not accessible. I have been working with him since Class 1 and he has been going for OT intermittently since Class 4. I have personally been seeing to his educational challenges using sites like All Kinds of Minds, SchwabLearning and LDOnline for help and inspiration. My biggest bugbear is teaching him Hindi- could somebody please suggest some techniques which could help him. This is one area I haven’t been able to get information on.

Nehha: If you scan back through these comments you will find a few people in various places in India who are tutors. You might try getting in touch with them.
The important thing is to find your brother a tutor or teacher who will work with him individually and help him learn how to learn, fill in his educational gaps, and give him more confidence.

N.I.P.S.D is one of them. though it is said its easy to overcome but it takes long timeand is very tetious for parents. i wantened to know some children forget things very easyly like after repeating spealing 10 times they mis spell same after 5mins. is there a treatment for memory loss?

You ask ‘is there a treatment for memory loss?’
I’m sure there are many hundreds of treatments for memory loss but that doesnt mean ‘off the shelf’ as it were treatment would work. You need to tackle the individual problems first and diagnos those problems to find what that treatment might be.

I have a brother he is 17 years old now, he could not read or write properly, even we had tried helping him recognise the letters but he is unable to read anything properly. he was failed in 5th standard then we had put him in a hindi medium school.but his problem remain the same, he is a mechanically very good like his thinking and rest of the things that he does while playing does not let anybody feel that he has some disability, but he cannot read or write.

hi every body , I am sundar from salem tamil nadu , my son 11 years is suffering from dyslexia and dysgraphkia. with knowing his disability i made him study in very high standard school in salem , where the teaches only for mark and spoken english , the teachers who taught in his lkg/ukg level didn,t find his diablity , only they commit with his marks, If the student would have located his disablity in his primary level it self , with the support of good teachers and parents the child may come out from problem . Why Iam disclosing this is to make an unity programme against schools who create maximum no of dyslexia children.my opinion is each and every school employ special teachers to over come dylexic students other putting him to special tution and make him still worse in his studies. or sending him out the school be safe with well study students.
A sad study is here that in India 30%of children are becomming as dydlexia from high level schools. They create dyslexic .

I think my daughter might be one of them with mild Dyslexia,
Well from when she was 1yr old I’ve been keen on reading bedtime stories for her. While reading I tried to point at big Capital letters for her to recognise and she gradually was verry excited and confident about recognising the letters. Slowly she learned the sounds too, I would suggest a fun activity for dyslexic kids to learn, and also multisensory learning.
and now she is 5, trying to read small words, because of less confidence or I am not sure what she does not enjoy reading. Ofcourse she has hard time reading. She has confusion with W and M , b and d, left and right, up and down. Attention problem at school.
She just hates to write, her handwriting is not good. But one day we were out at a park or some place and she loved to write on the sand, that was amazing.
I as a mother, have a lot of confidence in y little one, that one day she too would be great like Albert Einstein
One more thing I did observe, we put her into a summer camp which had science projects for joung kids. Eversince she keeps herself occupied in thinking and experimenting.

i just happen to read all th e comments… i thought i might also get some help …due to neglegence of dr.my 4 and half year old son suffered hypoxia….and now has delayed milestone ….he has just starteded speakg…though he understands everything but he cant recognise words alphabets/numbers…his skills are not developed/though i am sending him to a regular school in noida its of no help othe then he has learnt to mix welll with his peer group..and his vocabulary is increasing..i am lookong for SPECIAL EDUCATOR WHO CAN COME HOME OR IS NEAR BY NOIDA…..PLEASE HELP
