Rebecca,

All AirPort base stations can network printers via ethernet (old ones and new ones).

If you have an AirPort extreme base station it has a USB port as well and you can plug in a USB printer via that port. This is what we have.

We have an HP 1012 LaserJet printer connected to our AirPort extreme base station via USB. Once connected and turned on the base station will recognize it and depending on which version of Mac OS you're using (we use Tiger) the Rendezvous or newly renamed Bonjour software will pick it up when you print for the first time.

I'm still not super happy with the way this setup works in OS X.4 but it's a lot better than it used to be.

If you have a printer that can connect to the base station via ethernet that's even better as the base station will network it like a computer via DHCP and give it an IP address. We had a setup like that with an old Apple LaserWriter but once that died and Apple stopped making printers we went with this HP and it's been quite good. If I had it to do all over again I'd get a higher resolution HP printer that had ethernet. When this one dies, or if this one dies that's what I'll get.

I've been looking at cable as we've been on the dsl list for years (in the wilds of southern california). Dial up is getting old, and sometimes I need to work at work, instead of surf.

Anyway, I have an airport I bought with my powerbook, so it looks very promising. However, how have you integrated your printers into your wireless network? Thanks for the descriptions - very easy to follow.

Thanks Bonnie. Did you just read this particular article for the first time (note the copyright date)? Some of the information in it is a bit dated now. Someday soon I'll have to do an update to it.
