Just starting to look into this school. Friendly e-mail exchange so far.
Progressing to a visit…
Have a child who has been accepted @ Beacon and am considering enrollment pending an onsite visit. Would love to hear more about your experience.
Sorry for delay. Very friendly, nice small town environ. My son was a little surprised by the lack of a coherent campus, but LOVED the apartment dorms. School is very small so very much an extended family. I need to learn more about the LD remediation (Visit to Landmark in VT told me lot more). Academic facilities are a little shabby, but didn’t phase my son. They claim a great graduation and job placement rate. We are deciding between Beacon and Landmark.
Patricia: I think you’re going about this in exactly the right way and when you do find out more about their LD support program please let us know what you think. Your thoughts on Landmark will also be useful so feel free to post them on our listing for that school. Thanks.
I graduated from Beacon College in May of 2005, since then i have been steadily employed in residential programs for children and teens in foster care, I was the Residential Shift Supervisor in both programs. I recently started a Masters Degree in Mental Health Counseling. Attending Beacon College changed my life for the better. I learned many skills to help me learn in the future, I also learned a lot about myself as an individual. The faculty and staff at Beacon are incredibly supportive of their students and love to hear from them even after graduation, I have stopped by several times for visits since I graduated and have been welcomed with open arms every time. Beacon College is truly a family. If anyone has any questions about the school I would be happy to answer them to the best of my ability. Please feel free to e-mail me at bethanypfunk@yahoo.com and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Also please put “Beacon College” in the subject line so I don’t delete it.
Thanks for your comment Elizabeth, great to know that the school worked out for you.
Can you tell us a bit more about your masters program? Where are you going and does the program have the academic support you need (if you need any at this point)?
I started my master degree program at Webster University in Ocala, Florida. I was enrolled in their mental health counseling program. Webster has many campuses around the world, the campus in Ocala is very small, and the biggest class I was in had about 25 or 30 people in it. They also provide services, such as extended test time. Because of the small campus most instructors are available by phone, email or before and after class for conferences. Everyone at the campus is very helpful and encouraging. A my roommate from Beacon (and closest friend) also attends Webster, she started before I did and is almost finished with her program. I however moved out of the area and am currently looking for a new program that will suite my needs as well as Webster did. When I find that program I will let you know what it is.
Proceed with caution about Beacon…go beyond the “surface”.
What exactly does that mean Denny?
Hi…see many people here looking into both beacon and landmark…was wondering what your final decision was and if you don’t mind my asking…why? Also, my daughter is concerned about campus life /social activities…any insight as to these areas.
thanks!
Well I can’t speak for Landmark, but I do know that at Beacon there are many clubs, and if you are intrested in something that isn’t there get a few friends together and a teacher and start a club, when I attended Beacon my firends and I started the book club, which I beleive is still going. I was also a member of art club, theater goers club, cultral club, and student government. In additon to clubs they sponcer weekend activites, such as paint ball, camping, fishing, moives, mall days, disney and universial trips and concerts to name a few. The town of Leesburg has many street fairs including, bike weekend which is always a blast! The also have a mall and a moive theater, thats about it. It takes only 45 minutes to drive to orlando so a lot of people go there on weekends. As for me and my friends, we found our own fun, by watching moives and staying up late talking or play board and card games, but don’t let me fool you we went out alot too
I graduate from Beacon in May of 06. Beacon was the place where someone who was “Learning Disability” could learn and understand who they totaly are. At this college we werent a number! I was always a memeber of SGA, my last year I was Vice Presdient of SGA. Yes at the time when I graduate the job market wasnt that great but I was lucky to found a job in my area to get my feet wet in the “real world.” I am Student Advisor at South Florida Communtiy College. Also I did attend Webster for semspter but now I have apply for UCF graduate school in the field of Psychology.
Just starting to look into colleges for learning challenged son. Would love to hear from anyone that has taken the tour of Beacon and Landmark. Concerned to some degree about Denny’s comment and lack of response when asked what he meant. Any comments about Patricia’s question? Thank you
