William Van Cleave
Monday, December 6th, 2004
Currently, William Van Cleave is in private practice as a teacher trainer and educational consultant. A nationally recognized speaker, he has presented across the country on teaching strategies for students with language-based learning difficulties.
Since 1995, William has conducted presentations and workshops at a number of public and private schools and conferences around the country. He has trained teachers in Orton-Gillingham based multisensory instruction, written expression, morphology, and spelling strategies. Because of his high level of enthusiasm and energy, William particularly enjoys working with groups, whether it is visiting a school and sharing with its faculty or presenting at a national conference. His particular passions are written expression and morphology.
In 2004, William published the first edition of Everything You Want To Know & Exactly Where To Find It, a reference manual for Orton-Gillingham teachers and tutors. In May of 2008, a newly expanded edition of this reference manual was published. Additionally, he has created a number of other multisensory teaching materials.
During his career as a teacher, William tutored, taught literature and math, and held several administrative posts in the private school arena. He now tutors students using the Orton-Gillingham Approach.

William:
I’ve attended at least two of your demonstrations of the ParaSense writing software. I would like to purchase a copy.
We met briefly at at the end of the IDA conference in Phili. I work with Susan Santora at Learning House in Guiford, CT. You and Diana were on your way out and Susan purchased a copy of Everything You Want….., and later got copies for the staff. It’s a great book.
I see you went to SUNY New Paltz. My son has just been accepted there as an undergraduate for next fall. If you have any comments, we’d be interested. He hasn’t decided where to go yet.
Thanks for your time.

William,
After having the distinct pleasure of hearing your ‘fun’ lecture this week at the COABE conference, I decided to glance over your website. During your lecture to adult educators about teaching struggling writers in class, I kept wondering about my own little boy with Aspergers Syndrome. Your website seemed like confirmation to me that you should indeed speak with educators who work with Aspies like my son. Perhaps you already do.
I shared your website with some other moms I knew who have similar struggles. Futhermore, I shared your informative site with my son’s teachers. Thank you for bringing language alive. Thank you for tackling all the senses in your approach to writing. Thank you for breaking the barriers that so many of my students possess, including my most important student, my son!
Although I would like two sets of item on your website, I will settle for a substantial order.
Sincerely,
Amy Denney

Good Afternoon William,
I currently work for the School District of Philadelphia in the Office of Specialized Instructional Services. The population that we serve is the at-risk students as well as the students with disabilities. Your book Everything you wanted to know & exactly where to find it, was featured as an excellent reference tool during the LETRS training. Our office will be offering LETRS training in the Spring 2010 and would like to offer your book as a reference tool for the teachers in the course. I see that the book is out of print. Please indicate how we can purchase copies by Spring? Perhaps at least one copy until publishing is complete? I look forward to working with the book and supporting teachers in our Literacy initiative for students that are struggling with literacy. Thank you for your time. Renay
Renay,
I’m sure William will be thrilled and he might even see your posting here, but I’d suggest writing to him. His contact information is up towards the top of this page.
Hi. My book is not out of print. Unfortunately, that is how Barnes and Noble and other such sites list books they don’t carry. My book is in a successful 3rd edition as of May 2008. Please contact me directly — vcedconsulting@aol.com.
Hi William,
Janine
I know you through Katherine and from trainings at Delaware Valley Friends School. You gave me a pre-published copy of Everything you want to know…. I am conducting teacher trainings for the Mayor’s Commission On Literacy in Philly and I would like to have an actual published version. Please let me know how I can purchase it. It has been my bible for the literacy teaching I have been doing in Philly over the last few years. This year I am a literacy specialist at West Philadelphia Public High School.
Janine: You can purchase it by getting in touch with William at the address above.
