   My younger Sister (32) has all but finished her BA in Theatre. She has not been able to pass algebra. She is a kinesthetic learner. I am trying to find a textbook/kit/resources that I could get for her to help her to pass this course. Any suggestions?

   I’m not sure that using manipulative (blocks and 3D objects) could be used to make algebra sink in. I know things like unifix cubes and cuisinaire rods work well for arithmetic but algebra has a level of abstraction that might make this tough.

   I’m the same kind of learner and I did very poorly in algebra, much better in geometry.

   In designing the USBH books they looked at the ways children learn - visually, orally and kinetheticly (hands on) - and what media interested and appealed to most – TV, magazines, comic books, computers – and incorporated the features into our books that address these learning styles and prefered media.

   Colorful, bright, vibrant, highly detailed illustrations and pictures – Stimulates curiosity and entices the reader into the book.
   High ratio of pictures to text with a short magazine-like format – Straightforward text simplifies the reading process and encourages the child to read. It’s as if they’ve already taken a yellow highlighter to the information and only presented the essentials making it easier to categorize, file, recall & use!
   Pages filled with activity and opportunities for interaction between reader and text - Encourages the reader to relate and become involved with the wealth of information and fun presented. Exercising the mind and improving their critical thinking process.
   Touches of humor whenever possible - Humor to keep the reader entertained and attentive.
   An interactive hands on approach -A high kinesthetic focus encourages the reader to relate and become involved with what their reading.
   One additional feature that sets us apart from other books and is now incorporated in over 200 of our titles is the concept of Internet Linking. Computers have become such an integral part of the education and learning process for our children and with Usborne Books they have a safe way to explore this media.

   Usborne Publishing recognizes that parents can, and should, play an important role in helping with their children’s education. Their part in that will be to continue to create outstanding books that kids and adults just can’t put down!

   Try this kit. I wish I could afford it for all of my students. I teach pre-algebra, but it may help your sister grasp those basic concepts.

   So glad you asked! I teach a program called PRAXIS in St. Petersburg, FL that is exclusively for kinesthetic learners. I use a text from Key Curriculum Press called Discovering Algebra. It was created for hands-on learners and my students really like the activities that help them cement the symbolism in algebra. You might also invest in Hands-On Algebra (available through Amazon).

   Hope she finds success. She’s probably much better at geometry which is typical of kinesthetic leaners since it’s more visual by nature.
