K-12 Schools, Categorized
Monday, September 24th, 2007
The LD Schools Visit project has always had one primary goal: To make it easier for parents to find the right schools for their children with learning disabilities. By categorizing schools by the learning profile of the students they serve, we think we’ve added another valuable tool for a school search.
Clicking on each of the categories below will produce a list of schools that offer those services. However, not all schools in the K-12 Schools list at this web site have been categorized. We hope to categorize more schools as this project continues, possibly adding more categories to this list as the need arises.
Most schools fall into multiple categories and you’ll see a list of each of their categories of service at the bottom of each school’s post.
Schools with Services for Language-based Learning Disabilities (LLD)
Dyslexia, Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) or Language Processing Disorder
Schools with Services for Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Inattentive, hyperactive, or mixed types of ADD
Schools with Services for Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities (NVLD)
Difficulties with executive functions, organizational skills, spatial difficulties, with or without some degree of social difficulties
Schools with Services for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Asperger’s Syndrome, High Functioning Autism or Classic Autism
What category would Down Syndrome be under. We are looking for the best school for our 6 yr old daughter?
Thanks.
Charlie, Down Syndrome isn’t part of any categories we have here. There are schools for that condition but it wasn’t specifically addressed in the schools visited or categorized.
A few of the schools that address autism also work with kids with developmental disabilities similar to Down Syndrome, and so may be worth looking into.
Mr. Shapiro: Our 17 yr old LD daughter is attending Riverview School,MA after a recommendation from a Professional Counselor in CA. Our daughter will be a senior next yr. Kayla is doing quite well after a 2 yr nightmare battle with our local public hs in CA. We ended up in Due Process/Mediation which we unfortunately lost. We have filed an appeal.
Riverview School,MA, has an outstanding Vocational Program after HS but we were wondering if you could recommend an excellent LD Vocational Program in CA?
how do I find a school in my area?????? Looking for ADHD schools in Baton Rouge, La.
Maria-Lise: I used to have a way to list schools by state and it broke. At some point I’ll redo it but until then you need to sort through the schools that serve ADHD:
Schools with Services for Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Our 11 year old daughter was diagnosed with NVLD in 2005 – until she entered middle school (Sept 2008) she was able to keep her “head above water”. She is currently attending the local middle school (approx. 800 students) and is enrolled full-time in the special education classroom. She does integrate for ’specialists’ (art, music, etc.) and typically does not like gym or art — often asking to go to the nurse for a headache/stomach ache. We are aware that this is not the best place for her – but our options in Maine are extremely limited and we don’t anticipate being able to convince the public school system to out-place her. We are currently looking in either Massachusetts or Florida for a good, small, private school that will teach Catherine the skills she needs for survival — and with all optimism – a school that will help bring out all the good things in her. We are planning a trip to Florida mid-April to look at The Pinnacle School – Bradenton; The Dreams are Free School – Sarasota and possibly the Broad School – Bradenton. If anyone has any other suggestions we would welcome comments/input – a boarding school is not an option at this point.
