What does “emotionally fragile” mean? I’m looking for a placement for my 7 y.o. LD child (dyslexia) who has no behavior or emotional issues. I’ve spoken to admissions at a few schools DOE has recommended, who describe a percentage of their students as “emotionally fragile”. It is not a term I’m familiar with.
Any insights?
Susan: I’m guessing “emotionally fragile” is a term used to describe people who’s emotions can be influenced easily by their surroundings and this makes it difficult for them to thrive in a typical school setting.
My guess is students who exhibit social/emotional problems might be labeled “emotionally fragile.”
I’m guessing, the terms wasn’t in wide use when I was out on the road, but I like the term and sort of identity with it myself.
Susan, here’s a possibility: If 1, your 7 yr old young son is struggling with reading but is 2. in pretty good shape emotionally and 3. if that picture of him has been made clear to these admissions folks you’ve mentioned, then maybe they’re telling you (in code) that their setting is overkill.
Let me know if that does or doesn’t makes sense.
Richard’s definition is good. Fragile to me implies that their emotional state is easily “tipped.”
I HAVE A 10 YEAR OLD SON WHO HAS BEEN STRUGGLING ACADEMICALLY AND WAS TESTED AT THIS SCHOOL AND WAS TOLD THAT HE HAD ISSUES WITH PHONETICS AND DECODING. ITS BEEN TWO YEARS SINCE AND MY SON HAS BEEN THE SAME. HE HAD ONE ON ONE READING WITH A TEACHER AND HE SHOWED GREAT IMPROVEMENT UNTIL THE PROGRAM WAS NOT AVAILABLE FOR FOURTH GRADERS. HE IS CONSTANTLY PULLED OUT OF CLASS TO HAVE SMALL GROUP SESSIONS AND WHEN HE GOES BACK TO HIS REGULAR CLASS, HE IS LOST AND LOSES FOCUS. IT HAS AFFECTED HIS SELF ESTEEM. HE TELLS ME HE DOESNT WANT TO GO TO SCHOOL ANYMORE BECAUSE HE IS DUMB AND DOESNT WANT TO BE PLACED WITH THE SPECIAL ED KIDS. I AM NOW LOOKING FOR A SCHOOL THAT SPECIFICALLY DEALS WITH CHILDREN WHO ARE LEARNING DISABLES, HOWEVER, I DIDNT REALIZE HOW EXPENSIVE IT WOULD BE, ESPECIALLY WINSTON PREP. I AM NOW ON A WAITING LIST AT LENOX HILL HOSPITAL (NEW YORK CIY) TO HAVE MY SON TESTED TO PLACE HIM IN A PROPER SCHOOL AND HOPEFULLY ONE THAT I CAN AFFORD. I AM SO LOST AND WOULD LIKE ANY FEEDBACK AS TO WHAT I CAN DO TO HELP MY SON AND IN HOPES OF GETTING STATE FUNDING TO HELP WITH THE TUITION.
