I am a high school graduate with a learning disabillity. This disability has kept me from receving a scholarship to play basketball in college, in which I have been told by many coaches that I am an outstanding player. Can anyone tell me how I can obtain help in getting into a college not only for the sports but a chance to further my education.
Are there anyone who can guide me in helping my son transition from high school to college who has a learning disability
Mary, what kind of help are you looking for? There’s some excellent articles that guide, on this website (including the list/link at the top of this page. There are also college counseling consultants who can be hired to help in a variety of ways.
I need help. Im doin a project for my college english class. The teacher is requireing us to design a 40 day plan for a literacy class. He wants us to think about a way to included multisensory learning in our project in order to help more kids learn, but i dont really understand how multisensory learning works. What do these kinds of children need in order to learn better? what helps them learn better? what could help them to become better writers?
Thanks so much for responding to my post. Actually I don’t know what kind of help I need. I have tried different approaches resulting with little help or none at all. Who do I need to contact and when. He has been out of school for some months now, and I don’t want to run out of time.
Alyssa: It’s simple really. Multi-sensory means teaching to more than one sense simultaneously. So, instead of just lecturing, how about lecturing and illustrating on the board at the same time?
Instead of just having students read a chapter why not have them to a hands-on experiment while you lecture them.
Multi=more than one. Sensory= sense.
Teach to more than one sense at the same time or in sequence.
In phonics teaching, multi-sensory usually refers to hearing it, writing it and speaking it as well, in the old days, tracing the letter form with one’s finger.
What is even more effective is have a student illustrate (on the board) the teacher’s lecture while he or she is lecturing/reading. All the students become engaged learners as they watch the child draw on the board what the teacher is saying. After a few times, the students will begin to draw their own pictures of what the teacher is saying and…the best part…multi-sensory learning is not only occuring, but the students will retain what they have learned indefinately!
I desperately need a program for my son. He has ADHD and is about to be expelled from his current College which he started to attend in the Fall of 2008. We are financially drained so we need financial aid as well.
Hope someone has ideas.
Thank you,
Karen: why was he expelled from his current college? What happened? That would be good to know before choosing a new college.
Hi I am looking for a course for my friend who is just finished school. She is suffering from dyslexia. I have searched on the internet for some help but no luck. What is the best and most suited career path for people suffering from dyslexia?? She is super talented and very creative.
Reponse will be much appreciated,,thankyou vry much
Vinita: Your friend should have herself tested if she hasn’t already. Dyslexia can mean many things and the results of a series of tests will show her what her strengths and weaknesses are so that she can go after jobs that suit her.
For example, not all people with dyslexia have poor handwriting but if she does, learning how to type and using a computer will be essential.
When you say she’s just finished school, what level of school did she finish? High school, college, grad school?
Hi,
I have a son who is being tested for dyslexia. He is currently enrolled in a 4 year university. Had a horrible freshman year academically. Iam looking for colleges with comprehesive support and came upon South Oregon University. Any more info about the university will be very helpful.
Radha, did you call up Southern Oregon University? Seems like that would be a good thing to do:
http://www.sou.edu/
Thanks for your reply, Richard. Yes, i did call them and a very friendly Ld support co ordinator. Iam still looking at other colleges also. University of Arizona seems to have good support for LD. Are there any educational consultants who specially deal with kids with LD and are college aspirants??
Radha, Yes, there are many consultants who deal with college placements for students with LD. But, be warned, there are many college placement consultants who hang a shingle out after placing their own kids. You want someone with experience if you’re going to pay for advice.
Radha,
Richard’s right. You need to do your due diligence in finding a consultant who knows the terrain.
There’s a group called the IECA (Independent Educational Consultants Association) that can help you find a college consultant who knows LD issues as well. There are some in Oregon, myself included. You can contact me at sanfordshapiro@bendlearningcenter.com or sanfordmshapiro@gmail.com
Sanford
Thankyou Shapiro. Will surely contact you. Meanwhile i also browsed into this program called CIP, which seems to cater to kids with LD.

I have a 20 year daughter, with a learning disabilty who is interested in music, and in any kind of musical career. Quite frankly I am worried about her. She may have dyslexia, as she cannot read as well her own age peers. Her math is very weak as well and I contribute this to not only her disability, but the fact that I let her counselor talk me into not having her take math the last year of high school ( she told me she had her 2 years of math requirement). As a result when she went to a closeby community college last year, it was not easy for her academically, even though counselors knew about her disability. She did badly in one manth course (which was a basic one) and did alright with 2 others (a B and a P dfor passing in a reading course). She is also extremely shy and afraid to talk to counselors who could help her when she needs it. This I fear will be her greatest disadvantage, because she refuses to deal with people and depends on me to guide her everywhere.
She is not really interested in college, and yet, if she wants to persue a career in music (which is hard, I know) then I don’t know where I can send her. She plays guitar, and plays well. At best what can she do in music besides tutor other students? I am looking to see what colleges offer music programs for students with disabilties. I am also trying to see what other interests she can pursue. Any help is so appreciated!
Berklee school of music in Boston is she is good. many students there are ld. it is a great school. my child with ld wish is to attend berklee.
acceptence is based on auditions.
I am 25 yrs old. I want to attend college but I have a documented learning disabilty which includes storing and retreiving information, I am unable to remember 2 and 3 part directions. I need college to help me make a decent living in life or a trade school suggestion that will help me overcome this disability and be successful.. and ideas ?? I am unable to hold a full time skills job and the world seems to be passing me by.
Kyle: I highly recommend trying two things.
1. Make lists in a small notebook you carry with you and cross things off as you do them.
2. Use a tape recorder and/or a digital voice recorder to make the lists and delete (on digital) the things you do as you do them.
Tools can help. I have a similar problem and have used lists for many years, both on computers, in notebooks and on digital voice recorders.
I use an iPhone now and it has a voice recorder app which works very well for me.

We have a 22 year old son who has auditory learning difficulties and ADHD. I read UCBerkeley might have some allowed enrollment for kids with disabilities. Can you please advise me who to contact. Thanks, Cristina
I have a daughter who has been diagnoised with an auditory processing disorder. She is 22 and has met with no success in English 101. The Learning Center at the community college was not helpful and also a few instructors. She desperately wants a collge education / career! She has met with failure and is extremely depressed. I am looking for a college that will help her become and achieve success.
