Success Attributes Among Individuals With Learning Disabilities
Marshall H. Raskind has done some research on traits that lead people with learning disabilities to success in life. It’s a useful piece for everyone in our community to read.
- Self-awareness
- Proactivity
- Perseverance
- Goal-setting
- Presence and Use of Effective Support Systems
- Emotional Coping Strategies
I’ve been using this off and on for a while in my work.
One of the cool things is that once you look at the list I’m sure you’ll see what I see: Same list is helpful/true for anyone (those w/o LD).
Sandy: Absolutely. Good advice is good advice. Of course, one has to follow it…
One of the parts of this research I like is that the authors go into a second level of describing what each attribute means.
The one about “self-awareness” goes something like this: …being aware of ones strengths and weaknesses in a way that doesn’t over-identify with one’s weaknesses (“it’s a part of me, not all of me”) and accepts strengths as well (works to develop them).
Amen.
Yes. Absolutely. People with learning disabilities need to understand what a learning disability really is and what it can mean to them. I recommend that every parent should have this conversation with their LD child:

What is the essence of that conversation Ann?
