Pulitzer Prize Winner and Dyslexic, Philip Schultz Shares his Experience

Philip Schultz, Pulitzer prize winning poet will share his experiences growing up with dyslexia, at Elizabethtown College on February 22nd. I haven’t heard him speak, but have read his book, which pulls no punches when describing the difficulties faced in an unsupportive school environment. His book, My Dyslexia, describes his path to literacy.

The National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP) will be holding its national conference in Orlando, Florida next week, February 9th-11th at the World Swan and Dolphin Conference Center.

Sanford Shapiro (me) will be presenting next Saturday on the impact of Learning Disabilities on Therapeutic Concerns. The focus of the presentation is to help counselors and therapists become more effective by understanding how LD impacts mental health and one’s response to therapeutic interventions.

The conference is attended by therapeutic schools, wilderness and addiction programs as well as educational consultants worldwide.

USM hosts 16th annual DuBard Symposium on Dyslexia

Autism Spectrum, Family Workshop Series at NYU

The NYU Child Study Center announces a series of free workshops in which expert clinicians and researchers will address these and other concerns. The Autism Spectrum Disorders Clinical and Research Program’s 2012 Family Workshop Series is open to the public at no charge.

Even as awareness of autism grows along with the number of cases diagnosed, it remains a topic likely to raise more questions than answers. If you are a parent whose child is on the spectrum, or a school or health professional encountering increasing numbers of children with this mental health condition, you may have a host of concerns. Are there medications that can help? How much improvement in symptoms can be expected with good treatment? What are the best treatments? What can be done in the home and in general classroom settings to best support these children?

Understanding and Managing Learning Differences
July 16, 17, & 18

This 20-hour course provides an overview of learning differences including learning disabilities, inattention, impulsivity, and memory and language processing weaknesses as well as their impact on learning, self-esteem and behavior at home. Participants will review psychological and academic testing in order to one, better understand and read reports and two, practice active participation in the educational planning process. Attendees will discuss strategies to help students with learning and behavior at home and school, including more formal Accommodation Plans (504) and Educational Plans (IEP’s). Strategies for effective collaboration at Team Meetings will be practiced. All curriculum materials are included; cost is $500.
