Seven Kinds of Intelligence

Multiple intelligences has been popularized by the psychologist Howard Gardner.

Musical
The ability to discern meaning in rhythmically arranged sets of pitches — and to reproduce them.

Logical – Mathematical
Skill with numbers and a fascination with their patterns and operations; scientific ability; formal reasoning.

Linguistic
Skill with words characterized by a sensitivity to their meaning, order, function, sound, and rhythm.

Spatial
The capacity to perceive the world accurately and to manipulate these perceptions mentally.

Bodily
The ability to use the body in highly differentiated and skilled ways for expressive and goal-directed purposes.

Intrapersonal
The capacity to discriminate among and understand one’s own feelings and to draw upon them in guiding one’s behavior.

Interpersonal
The ability to make distinctions among other individuals, especially their moods, intentions, and motivations.

Orthographic skills = spelling skills

Orthography is the study of spelling and how letters combine to represent sounds and form words.

From orthos ‘correct’ + -graphia ‘writing.’

Spelling Checker

A feature of many word processors that compares the words that you type to a list of words that it has stored and words that you use that are not on its list are flagged and suggestions for correct spellings are offered.

Spelling checkers can be part of other programs, integrated into operating systems (Mac OS X) or they can be written as stand-alone applications.

What differentiates spelling checkers is:

1. the size of the word list used to compare words to (the longer the better)

2. the algorithm used to offer suggestions when words are not on its list. Some suggestion algorithms are more phonemically sensitive than others (they are aware of typical dyslexic mistakes in spelling).
